Because a long service life and prompt maintenance of structures lower the need for reconstruction significantly, monitoring and evaluating the state of a nation's civil engineering infrastructure is essential for its economic development. Civil engineering infrastructure's structural performance deteriorates over time due to both immediate and long-term effects, including material deterioration and weathering, rebar corrosion, water seepage, loading conditions, environmental degradation, and crack formation. These effects can occur after or during construction and include improper curing, vibration, shrinkage cracks, and workmanship. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is essential from the beginning to the end of service life. By identifying damage spots early in the service life cycle and keeping an eye on potential control elements that might cause future damage, service life can be extended for civil infrastructure.
