To the Editor: With the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing influence in health care, the time is opportune to turn our focus toward the potential of advanced AI language models, like ChatGPT, in bringing about global equity in academic medicine.1 The dialogue surrounding AI in health care is abundant but often overlooks the significant disparities in AI accessibility, particularly in underserved regions, thereby rendering it a pressing international concern. ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art AI model, holds tremendous promise in the domain of medical education. By engaging students in diagnostic reasoning, clinical decision-making, and critical thinking, it equips them with competencies necessary for a future dominated by AI.2 But the concern lies in the equitable distribution of such transformative technology. A significant proportion of medical students and educators in underserved regions remain deprived of the benefits these innovations bring, creating an unjust digital divide.3 By narrowing this gap, we can foster diversity in the medical workforce by democratizing access to high-quality educational resources. Such an inclusive environment not only enriches learning experiences but also cultivates the diverse perspectives crucial for driving innovation in medical research and practice. The potential benefits of ChatGPT in health care improvement in underserved regions are significant. It can streamline the literature review process, discern patterns in expansive datasets, and inspire novel hypotheses that can lead to substantial advances in understanding complex diseases endemic to these regions.4 This can accelerate medical breakthroughs and contribute to global health equity. However, this endeavor is not without its challenges. As we harness the power of AI, it is paramount to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information these AI models generate. The ethical considerations and potential biases associated with AI cannot be overlooked.5 It is imperative to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to establish guidelines and best practices for integrating AI models like ChatGPT into medical education on a global scale. If judiciously deployed, ChatGPT can be instrumental in driving equity and diversity in academic medicine, laying the foundation for more inclusive and innovative health care solutions. As we navigate the challenges and possibilities of AI,6 our commitment to equitable access to these advanced tools can catalyze a new era of academic medicine. This era, centered on inclusivity and diversity, holds the promise of advancing health care for all, one step at a time.
