Balancing Efficiency and Ethics: The Challenges of Artificial Intelligence Implementation in Journalism

This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest literature on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism and newsrooms, conducted by rigorous and systematic research principles. The review highlights the potential benefits and risks of AI adoption in newsrooms and emphasizes the need for a balanced approach. One key theme that emerged from the studies is the potential for AI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of news production. AI can automate tasks such as content recommendation and creation, as well as data extraction and analysis. This can lead to cost savings for news organizations and enable journalists to focus on higher-level tasks such as investigative reporting. Another important theme is the potential for AI to help journalists better understand their audiences. AI can be used to personalize content recommendations and improve engagement with readers, especially in an era where media consumption is increasingly personalized. However, there are many challenges related to the use of artificial intelligence in journalism that isn’t easily solved. Some of these challenges include the difficulty of creating algorithms that accurately reflect political and societal issues and the unique nature of many journalism issues, making it hard to find training data. Additionally, many people have ethical concerns regarding using AI in journalism, such as the potential for misinformation and bias to be created.
