The use of chatbots has expanded significantly in recent years, impacting various fields such as marketing, support systems, education, healthcare, cultural heritage, and entertainment. This presentation explores the growing global interest in chatbots and the factors driving their adoption across these diverse sectors. We examine how societal stereotypes shape chatbot design and discuss the core technologies that underpin these systems. Additionally, we categorize chatbots based on their specialized functions and the needs they meet, and we outline the principles behind modern chatbot design along with key development platforms. The advancement of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has been crucial in enhancing chatbot capabilities, enabling more natural and human-like interactions. Voice-activated chatbots like Siri and Alexa showcase how NLP can improve user engagement through conversational interfaces. Recent progress in machine learning has further boosted the accuracy and effectiveness of NLP, making chatbots a valuable tool for various applications. Our discussion highlights the exciting prospects of NLP-powered chatbots in personalized learning and advocates for continued research to unlock their full potential. We also review rule-based training approaches, such as using Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML), which enable chatbots to operate based on predefined response patterns.
