The Effect of Artificial Intelligence on English Learners' Anxiety Levels

With the development of communication, acquiring a second language different from one's first language has become of great significance. Moreover, as the current era is known for the prevalence of technology being an integral part of individual lifestyles, the phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI) has turned into one of the central issues in language teaching and learning. The chapter explores the concept of second language anxiety as a key phenomenon. As per the literature, AI has been reported to have several benefits, such as lower cognitive load, improved language output, a higher level of motivation, adaptive learning environment, provision of personalized feedback, and reduced demotivation. However, it is not free from shortcomings, such as unfamiliarity with computer skills can cause even more L2 anxiety in language learners. Therefore, it is concluded that the over-reliance on this technology may not be as advantageous as it may seem. The chapter is set to provide practical implications for the stakeholders in the realm of language education.
