Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Technology-Enhanced Language Learning

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into digital language education is reshaping how languages are taught and learned by addressing key challenges such as accessibility, personalization, and learner engagement. Despite growing global adoption, there remains a research gap in understanding the practical impacts of AI-driven tools on language acquisition and the pedagogical adjustments required to support diverse learners. This chapter explores the significance of AI in enhancing digital language instruction through technologies such as AI-powered chatbots, adaptive learning platforms, and automated assessment systems. Using a mixed-methods approach—comprising teacher and student surveys alongside comparative analysis of traditional and AI-assisted instruction—this study investigates how AI tailors instruction to individual proficiency levels, offers instant feedback, and supports interactive learning. Findings indicate that AI significantly improves learner motivation, retention, and pronunciation through real-time feedback and speech recognition. While digital infrastructure challenges persist in some contexts, mobile-based AI tools have shown promise in bridging digital divides. The study underscores the need for targeted teacher training and strategic policy measures to effectively harness AI’s potential in language education. This research contributes to the broader discourse on technology-enhanced language learning by offering insights into how AI can create more equitable, personalized, and effective learning experiences.
