Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Innovative Teaching Methods in the 21st Century Classroom

Classrooms have always evolved along with prevailing social practices and technologies. Let us consider AI or artificial intelligence. This chapter insists that we do not consider it merely as a sophisticated form of automation. At the current moment, AI is rapidly becoming integrated into the English Language Teaching (ELT) discipline. Many assume that it will do little more than make lessons more personalized, more engaging, and more efficient. It may do even more. We discuss AI in, for instance, providing real time writing feedback, pronunciation, and vocabulary tutoring, and in generating tasks for learners to communicate for advanced learning. We examine the implications of these systems in SLA and the role of the ELT teacher as a learning facilitator and orchestrator of feedback versus a primary source of knowledge. We discuss perniciously important, practical, and ethical matters such as linguistic bias, teacher and student AI literacy, governing frameworks, data privacy, and inequitable systems to use advanced techniques.
