Artificial Intelligence in Professional Growth: The Mock Interview Partner and the Augmented Learner

In an era marked by rapid digital disruption and evolving professional expectations, learners and job seekers are increasingly required to adapt without consistent access to mentorship or personalised guidance. This paper examines the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a supportive, non-intrusive mentor in two key domains: mock interview preparation and personalised learning. AI-powered interview platforms simulate real-world scenarios, offering real-time feedback on speech, behaviour, and confidence, while also assisting interviewers by highlighting bias and communication gaps. Simultaneously, AI enables the emergence of the “augmented learner” through adaptive, self-paced, and reflective learning environments that respond to individual needs. While these technologies enhance accessibility and preparedness, limitations remain regarding emotional depth, cultural sensitivity, and ethical concerns. This review highlights existing research gaps and argues for collaborative, human-centred AI systems that augment—rather than replace—human development in education and professional readiness.
