AI-Mediated Work and Algorithmic Literacy

The workplace is undergoing a transformation unlike any before. Artificial intelligence (AI) is not merely a tool for automating repetitive tasks but an active agent in shaping professional communication, decision-making, and knowledge production. As AI becomes an integral part of workplace dynamics, algorithmic literacy – understanding how AI systems function, influence decisions, and structure professional interactions – emerges as a critical competency for navigating AI-integrated work environments. Despite the inevitability of AI’s impact, there remains a significant gap in workplace preparedness. Recent polling suggests that while most professionals recognize AI’s influence on their careers, far fewer believe AI skills will be advantageous. Similarly, our research in higher education reveals a disconnect: While students express concern over AI’s impact on future employment, faculty, staff, and librarians remain largely indifferent.
