The Effects of ChatGPT-Assisted Inquiry-Based English Reading Instruction on Elementary Students’ Critical Reading Skills and Learner Perceptions
This study examines the impact of an inquiry-based English reading program using ChatGPT on elementary learners’ reading proficiency and perceptions. Conducted over four weeks with 5th-grade students, the study employed a mixed-methods approach combining pre- and post-tests with post-interviews. Results revealed significant improvement in learners' reading abilities, particularly in contextual understanding and inference-making. ChatGPT interactions boosted learners’ confidence, reduced anxiety, and fostered autonomy and metacognitive strategies. However, differentiated scaffolding was needed to accommodate varying levels of digital literacy and language proficiency. While AI acted as a motivating learning partner, effective integration required tailored prompts and leveled reading materials. This study may provide a practical framework for integrating AI into primary English education and could contribute to redefining the roles of teachers, learners, and technology in future classrooms.
