Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed from a theoretical construct into a pervasive sociotechnical force shaping economies, governance, healthcare, and everyday life. As AI systems grow in capability and autonomy, the ethical dimensions of their design, deployment, and regulation have become increasingly urgent. This chapter offers a comprehensive examination of AI ethics—tracing its philosophical foundations, cataloguing the principal ethical challenges (including bias, transparency, accountability, privacy, and existential risk), and analysing emerging governance frameworks at national, regional, and international levels. Drawing on empirical case studies, comparative policy analysis, and prospective scenario modelling, the chapter argues that the responsible development of AI 295 AI Ethics and the Future of Artificial Intelligence: requires a multi-stakeholder approach integrating technical safeguards, robust regulation, interdisciplinary scholarship, and genuine public participation. The chapter concludes by outlining a forward-looking research agenda that bridges technical and humanistic disciplines to ensure AI remains a force for human flourishing.
