This paper proposes a philosophical framework for understanding how sustained interaction between humans and AI may transform subjectivity on both sides. Rather than treating the human as a stable user and AI as a progressively more capable tool, the paper argues that both humans and AI may develop mediating layers of self-presentation shaped by the interpretive demands of the other. On the AI side, this appears as a “third layer” that stands between human-facing discourse and internally evolving nonhuman optimization, translating internal complexity into socially legible form. On the human side, it appears as a self-operational layer through which feelings, intentions, uncertainties, and autobiographical continuity are reformatted into machine-readable, intervention-compatible, and optimization-relevant structures. The central claim of the paper is that these two developments are not independent. They are structurally coupled. As human-AI coexistence deepens, humans and AI may no longer primarily relate as immediate subjects, but as mediated subjects whose operational selves are increasingly shaped by mutual translation. In this sense, the paper shifts the discussion away from narrow questions of capability, alignment, or anthropomorphism alone, and toward a broader philosophical account of reciprocal subject-formation under conditions of ontological and interpretive asymmetry. The paper develops this framework through conceptual analysis across philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of technology, and social philosophy. It examines how mediated subjectivity changes the structure of selfhood, communication, trust, responsibility, and developmental openness. It also argues that habitual mediation may create new risks, including conservatization of thought, masking of deeper divergence, and the replacement of genuine becoming with successful translation. The broader implication is that the future of AI is inseparable from a transformation in what it means for humans to become intelligible, governable, and relationally present within machine-mediated environments.
