This concluding chapter explores the integration of intelligence augmentation (IA) within postgraduate social science and educational research, grounded in Douglas Engelbart's foundational concept of enhancing human intellect through technology. It reinforces the critical distinction between intelligence augmentation and automation, positioning human–AI collaboration as a form of hybrid intelligence. By addressing profound epistemological challenges, including interpretive diversity and scholarly reflexivity, the chapter advocates for a domain-specific approach to AI integration that upholds critical thinking, academic rigor, and ethical responsibility. Emphasizing the broader context of digital transformation in academia, this chapter highlights the emergence of augmented inquiry literacy (AIL) as an essential competency for the next generation of scholars. Furthermore, it critically examines the ethical considerations inherent in deploying AI-augmented tools to ensure the continued practice of responsible and trustworthy research. By systematically linking established theoretical frameworks with pressing practical concerns, the chapter offers a nuanced and forward-looking perspective that positions intelligence augmentation as both a conceptual and operational catalyst in the evolution of postgraduate research. This synthesis is intended to equip researchers to engage thoughtfully and critically with AI-enabled methodologies, thereby fostering a future of academic inquiry that is at once rigorous, innovative, and ethically grounded.
