Collaborating with Machines: Generative AI as a Catalyst for Creative Development in Digital Art Education
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping creative education, serving as a cognitive co-creative force that expands how learners think and construct meaning. However, the integration of these systems in non-Western contexts reveals significant tensions regarding cultural representation and algorithmic bias. This study examines how 28 undergraduate digital art students in Kuwait engaged with DALL·E 3 during a structured, studio-based ideation process. Employing a reflexive thematic analysis of iterative prompt sessions, visual artifacts, and reflective journals, the research investigates the pedagogical implications of human–AI collaboration within the specific cultural ecology of the Arabian Gulf. The findings indicate that while the AI system expanded students’ conceptual imagination and fostered aesthetic risk-taking, it frequently generated outputs rooted in “Algorithmic Orientalism”—visual hallucinations that stereotyped or erased local heritage. Consequently, the creative process evolved into a site of cultural stewardship, where students engaged in “counter-scripting” to resist homogenized data narratives and assert authentic regional identities. These results contribute to post-digital creative pedagogy by demonstrating that AI literacy is not merely technical, but ethical and cultural. The study advocates for a pedagogical model where AI functions as a friction-generating interlocutor, catalyzing critical awareness of authorship, agency, and the politics of representation in the Global South.
