Artificial Intelligence and the Future Structure of Scientific Discovery: A Philosophical Perspective
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming scientific practice by identifying patterns, generating hypotheses, and making discoveries that frequently exceed direct human cognitive capacities. These developments raise a fundamental philosophical question: how does artificial intelligence change the structure of scientific discovery itself? This paper argues that AI does not replace scientific explanation but reorganizes its role within scientific inquiry. Traditionally, scientific discovery and scientific explanation were closely intertwined. Increasingly, however, computational systems are capable of discovering organizational regularities before scientists understand their underlying significance. From the perspective of Generative Continuum Ontology (GCO), this development represents not the replacement of scientific understanding but the emergence of a new stage within the scientific process. Artificial intelligence progressively expands the capacity to identify organizational regularities, while scientific explanation remains responsible for integrating these discoveries into coherent organizational understanding. The future of science is therefore characterized not by the disappearance of explanation but by its increasing philosophical importance as the bridge between computational discovery and scientific understanding.
