Beyond the Language Model: Reflections on the Emerging Importance of Agent Harnesses in Applied Artificial Intelligence
This paper presents a statement of intent outlining future research into AI agent harnesses and their role in the development of practical intelligent systems. Rather than proposing new algorithms or benchmarking language models, it explores why the orchestration layer surrounding AI models may become increasingly important as foundation models continue to improve. The paper draws upon the author's practical experience designing AI agents, automations and full-stack AI applications, and outlines a research direction focused on architecture, coordination, memory, tooling and human–AI collaboration. It is intended as the first publication in a broader programme of future research.
