This environment provides an on demand access to configurable shared resources. Sharing of resources and service level management can be easily managed and maintained over the internet. Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence. Cloud computing is significant because of the pay-as-you-go pricing. Cloud computing provides infrastructure, hardware, software and storage as a service. Thus it provides a holistic compute power to the user. Research shows that large amount of energy is consumed by the data centre. Thus there is a need to conserve energy through optimal resource allocation policy. This paper provides an overview of various methodologies incorporated to handle energy consumption. It also provides an insight to use appropriate techniques efficiently for better utilization of resources
