Dynamic Scenario Adaption for Simulation Training

Human behavior models support simulation-based training, experimentation, and mission rehearsal. However, these models are often brittle when used outside of their original development context, resulting in diminished effectiveness of simulation. This paper describes the Scenario Director, a software component developed for an operational simulation system, that enables scenario designers and operators to use pre-existing behavior models in new and different usage contexts than the ones anticipated when the models were developed. The Scenario Director leverages methods and algorithms from intelligent tutoring systems, supervisory control, and computational cognitive modeling. The paper outlines the motivations and requirements for scenario adaptation, overviews the solution, and outlines multiple evaluations of the technology. The Scenario Director is now integrated in a deployed simulation system and is being used to deliver operational training.
