Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) normally combined of large amount of smart wireless sensor nodes that have less power and small in size. For wide range of applications of WSN, energy efficient routing protocol has to be developed. In cluster based hierarchical routing protocols, most of the times base station (BS) is used as a leading controller for the selection of cluster heads (CHs) for which consumption of energy is increased. In LEACH protocol, the CH is selected randomly thus network failure may occur. In this paper, we propose a new re-clustering algorithm (NRCA) to reduce energy consumption and increase lifetime of the network. In the proposed protocol, data transmission in the network is based on the hop by hop principle. Instead of BS, new CH is chosen among the nodes reside in a single hop distance from the current CH with maximum remaining energy. In the NRCA, new clustering is done if remaining energy of the present CH is less than a threshold value. From simulation results, the introduced re-clustering protocol is ensured to be more energy-effective and have a good longevity of the network compared to traditional LEACH method.
