Securing SCADA Systems – Cyber Threats & Techniques. Case Study

The SCADA networks have evolved over the last decades from small, isolated networks to extensive global IT systems. Also, due to the pandemic situation, remote work has become the new standard, so that the old borders of the SCADA networks are no longer existing. Unfortunately, there are also associated risks: SCADA networks are an attractive target for hackers, so that new defense methods, as dynamic as the attackers are, have to be taken account of. The solution for ensuring SCADA cyber security presented in this paper is based on tracing the abnormalities of the system by comparing to the baseline values.

Abstract

The SCADA networks have evolved over the last decades from small, isolated networks to extensive global IT systems. Also, due to the pandemic situation, remote work has become the new standard, so that the old borders of the SCADA networks are no longer existing. Unfortunately, there are also associated risks: SCADA networks are an attractive target for hackers, so that new defense methods, as dynamic as the attackers are, have to be taken account of. The solution for ensuring SCADA cyber security presented in this paper is based on tracing the abnormalities of the system by comparing to the baseline values.
