Adversarial Computing: Integrating Resilience and Security Into Foundational CS Education

Computer Science education is foundational to preparing students for the complexities of modern software development, emphasizing robust, reliable, and maintainable systems. With the growing prevalence of cybersecurity threats across public and private sectors, there is an urgent need to expand this foundation by integrating adversarial thinking—a mindset that encourages students to anticipate how systems might be attacked, misused, or fail under adversarial conditions. Aligned with the ACM/IEEE-CS CS2023 curricular guidelines, which emphasize secure computing, software development principles, and societal impacts of technology, this paper introduces an instructional approach that infuses adversarial thinking into early CS courses: CS 0, CS 1, CS 2, and Data Structures. By embedding adversarial practices—such as threat modeling, code analysis for vulnerabilities, and thinking like an attacker—students not only deepen their problem-solving skills but also develop a resilience-oriented mindset necessary for secure software design. This work aims to empower educators to modernize their computing curricula by incorporating experiential, security-aware practices aligned with industry and academic expectations. In doing so, students are prepared to become not just proficient programmers but responsible and forward-thinking computer scientists capable of addressing today’s and tomorrow’s cyber challenges.
