Cybersecurity in the Era of Autonomous Artificial Intelligence: Risks, Ethics, and Governance
Autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a core component of contemporary cybersecurity infrastructures. These systems have the capability to independently observe digital environments, analyze complex threat patterns and begin defensive responses with less human involvement. While such autonomy provides substantial increase in scalability, detection precision and response efficiency, it also introduces new categories of technical vulnerability, ethical concern and governance complexity. This paper provides a comprehensive sociotechnical evaluation of cybersecurity in the context of autonomous AI. We investigate emerging threat models associated with autonomous decision-making, explore ethical implications surrounding responsibility, transparency, privacy and authority delegation, and highlight governance limitations in this existing security frameworks. To eliminate these challenges, layered governance architecture is proposed that puts together technical safeguards, structured human oversight, organizational accountability and regulatory alignment. Experimental analysis conducted within a simulated autonomous Security Operations Center (SOC) shows both operational performance enhancement and systemic risks, underscoring the importance of governance-driven deployment strategies.
