Various embodiments of the present invention relate to an electronic device having covers which may be coupled and an operating method thereof, the electronic device may include a housing; a first cover coupled with at least part of the housing, and comprising at least one first identification terminal; a second cover coupled with at least part of the first cover, and comprising at least one second identification terminal which is electrically connectable with the first identification terminal; and a processor. The processor may be configured to obtain at least one of first information related to the first cover or second information related to the second cover, identify at least one of a type of the first cover or a type of the second cover based on at least one of the first information or the second information, and perform a designated operation based on at least one of the type of the first cover or the type of the second cover.
