The present invention relates generally to seismic exploration and more particularly to a method for inversion of seismic data to yield estimates of formation lithology. Seismic data representing a measure of reflectivity of subsurface formations to seismic energy imparted therein can be inverted to obtain measures of formation elastic properties. By cross-plotting selected formation elastic properties on a color-binned lithology diagram, a lithology section can be produced having increased lithological resolution.
