An automated banking machine is able to receive currency bills therein during a deposit transaction. A sensing assembly can sense radiation that is at least one of reflected from and transmitted through, a received bill. At least one computer is associated with the sensing assembly. The condition of a received bill can be determined as geniune, suspect, or counterfeit. A each respective suspect and counterfeit bill can be correlated to a respective bill depositor. The correlating data can include depositor image data and bill image data. The machine is further able to dispense deposited bills.
