The present invention relates to a method for operating a wind power plant, with at least one wind turbine generator and a power plant controller, the method includes the steps of receiving a request to reduce active power output from the wind power plant, dispatching a reference set point to the at least one wind turbine generator to lower a voltage level of the least one wind turbine generator, and the at least one wind turbine generator controls the voltage level of the least one wind turbine generator, to a new lower set point.
