Vehicle Localization Based on MEMS Sensor Data

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is widely used for accurately determining the position of a vehicle. At present, the accuracy may decrease depending on the reception status of radio waves coming in from satellites. Furthermore, there is an undeniable possibility of cyber terrorism or jamming against the satellite system. Therefore, in this study, we reduced the dependence on GNSS by introducing a method for estimating the position of a traveling vehicle on the basis of altitude profile, driving behavior (such as turning left or right), road surface roughness, and changes in inclination. Along with accurate position information, the above information is acquired by a micro-electromechanical system(MEMS) sensor in advance and used as reference data. Next, the corresponding sensor information obtained by driving the vehicle is compared and collated with the reference data in real time to estimate the accurate position. The results of a real-field experiment on an actual road demonstrated the effectiveness of this method.
