AI

This chapter explores the relationship between discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) and futures thinking. It explores how current views on AI presume a narrow definition of intelligence and, in so doing, constrict the potentially diverse roles AI might have in the future – some where it acts in calculative, 'autonomously intelligent' ways and in other where it might support more embodied, less calculative forms. 'Intelligent action' in the future needs to be at least as diverse as the forms we see around us today. As efforts are made to develop AI and determine its future role, so this diversity needs to be incorporated in futures thinking.
