This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into contemporary legal decision-making systems. Traditionally governed by normative principles, interpretative reasoning, and human judgment, the legal domain is now undergoing a significant transformation due to the rise of AI-based technologies. From predictive models that anticipate judicial outcomes to natural language processing (NLP) tools for legal document review, AI promises to enhance procedural efficiency, consistency, and access to justice. However, its application raises critical concerns surrounding algorithmic bias, opacity, and accountability. The study addresses three central questions: How is AI deployed in legal systems? What are its core advantages? And what legal and ethical challenges accompany its use? While AI tools can promote objectivity and reduce systemic delays—particularly in areas like criminal justice, contract analysis, and risk assessment—the risks of reinforcing historical discrimination, the “black box” nature of many models, and the fragmentation of legal responsibility are significant. Employing a socio-legal and normative framework, the paper examines the effects of AI on legal values and institutions. It draws on comparative insights from jurisdictions such as the European Union, the United States, and Japan, integrating legal scholarship with empirical findings from computer science. Policy recommendations include the adoption of transparency mandates, auditability standards, human-in-the-loop safeguards, and inclusive data practices. Ultimately, the paper acknowledges AI’s potential to reshape legal decision-making but emphasizes that such transformation must occur within a framework of human-centered governance. Without robust legal and ethical oversight, the risk of undermining fundamental principles of fairness, due process, and democratic accountability remains high. The future of legal AI lies not in replacing human judgment, but in supporting it through transparent, equitable, and just technological design.
