Redefining the Role of English Teachers in Classrooms Integrated with Artificial Intelligence
Abstract The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping English Language Teaching (ELT), impacting pedagogy, learner autonomy, and classroom interaction. AI tools—such as intelligent tutoring systems, chatbots, and automated feedback—alter both student learning and teacher support. This paper examines how AI redefines English teachers' identities and responsibilities. Drawing on research, it argues that AI shifts teachers' roles to those of facilitator, learning designer, ethical guide, and literacy mentor, rather than replacing them. The analysis covers pedagogical shifts, necessary teacher skills, main challenges, and future directions in English language education. Effective AI integration depends on a human-centered pedagogy that keeps teachers central.
