As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in everyday work, organizations often evaluate it through a familiar lens: whether it raises productivity. This article argues that this is too narrow a question. In dynamic, interdependent organizations, AI does more than automate tasks or support decisions. It also shapes the climate in which people collaborate by signaling what behaviors are visible, valued, and rewarded. In that sense, AI is not only a production technology or even a coordination technology; it is also a <b>climate technology</b>. This matters because collective intelligence depends not only on analytical capability, but also on the human conditions that support collaboration: autonomy, competence, relatedness, and psychological safety. AI can strengthen those conditions when it is deployed to surface interdependence, support team reflection, and augment shared reasoning, attention, and memory. It can undermine them when it is used primarily for surveillance, ranking, and individual optimization. The article contrasts these two deployment logics, explains why their consequences differ, and proposes design principles for using AI to build organizations that are not only more efficient, but also more adaptive, intelligent, and humane.
