When Search Becomes an Answer: What Generative AI Changes About Learning is a research-informed conceptual essay and narrative synthesis about generative search, learning and epistemic agency. Using the 2026 Common Sense Media audit of Google AI Overviews and AI Mode as a bounded case study, it distinguishes answer quality from the learning activity that remains with the user. The essay connects evidence on assisted versus independent performance, source evaluation, productive failure, cognitive offloading and appropriate reliance. It argues that a ready-made answer may support quick orientation while also taking over source selection, comparison, justification or practice that an educational task was intended to preserve. It proposes four design directions: match help to the goal, stage assistance, make sources visible and give users meaningful choice. The work is not a systematic review, meta-analysis, original empirical study, longitudinal study or peer-reviewed article. It does not establish long-term learning effects of Google Search.
