Framework For Ethics Of AI In Games: Balancing Player Autonomy, Privacy, Behavioural Manipulation

Artificial Intelligence now plays a key role in shaping how modern digital games are designed and experienced. Developers can create worlds that change and respond instantly. They can alter storylines, adjust difficulty levels, and modify character behaviour based on each player’s actions. These improvements make games feel richer, more personal, and often more enjoyable. At the same time, they raise important questions: how much freedom do players really have, is their personal information being handled properly, and are these systems designed for fun or mainly to push people toward unhealthy habits?This paper presents a framework based on three main principles: autonomy, privacy, and player experience. The goal is to promote design practices that expand choice instead of limiting it, protect sensitive information rather than exploit it, and enhance enjoyment without falling into manipulation. The framework also suggests practical steps developers can take, like making AI systems more transparent and easier to understand, collecting only the data that serves a real purpose, and designing games that prioritize player creativity and well-being. By adopting this balanced view, the gaming industry can move forward with innovation while maintaining trust, acting responsibly, and creating lasting value for players.
